The Girls Advancing In STEM (GAINS) Initiative seeks to support high school girls’ interest in STEM topics. Through the GAINS Network, GAINS club structure and conference we help high school girls, connect with peers interested in STEM, explore STEM career options, interact with STEM role models, engage with a community of girls and women who are on the same path for support and encouragement learn about STEM topics The GAINS Network is a school-based virtual community for high school girls interested in STEM topics. It is a place where high school girls interested in STEM can connect with each other and with women working and studying in STEM fields. We connect high school girls and young women interested in STEM with women leaders working in STEM-related fields. We provide role models, virtual mentors, and networking opportunities for women and girls at various stages of their educations and careers. Membership is open to any high school serving girls (public or private, single gender or co-educational).  If you would like more information contact us at  gains@greenwichacademy.org.
Become a GAINS member school.

Many of our member schools use the GAINS network resources and schedule of events to support their work on campus.  Several have started student-led GAINS groups/clubs that meet regularly to explore STEM topics and careers.

Joining is easy and free!  Schools register to join the network and sign a membership agreement.

Students (and/or teachers) organize a group of high school girls who are interested in STEM and form a GAINS club/group.

GAINS member schools provide:

  • Two female student leaders who are active in the network and willing to meet (virtually) three times during the school year with the GAINS Network administrator.
  • One faculty member who will be the network leader and point of contact for your school.
  • Connection to potential STEM role models/mentors for the network from your local community.

The GAINS Network provides:

  • A virtual platform where students can connect with each other and with STEM volunteers (women working and studying in STEM fields)
  • virtual mentor events and pairings throughout the school year.
  • Access to STEM professionals who are GAINS members through a keyword search function.

Volunteer Information

Our virtual community consists of high school girls interested in STEM fields and women who are currently working or studying in these fields.

If you would like to join the network as a volunteer please complete this information form.

GAINS mentors/role models are women in STEM-related professions who are active members of the network and available to students through the network platform. Volunteers agree to log in each week to respond to student inquires about their STEM profession and/or education – a time commitment of about 20 minutes each week.

For those whose schedules permit a bit more interaction, we host a variety of virtual events that you can opt into throughout the school year, depending on your schedule. You can indicate interest in those events as part of this application.

If you are interested in joining our community you can complete the Volunteer Information form found here.

Possible virtual events

STEM town hall: panel or individual

This is a live online discussion with GAINS members hosted on our network platform.  Role models can be featured alone or in a panel format.   Time commitment:  We anticipate a 60 minute commitment with  20 minutes to get set up and test the system followed by a 30 minute live event.   We ask that you login to the network and respond to follow-up questions once a day for the three days following the event.  5-10minutes a day.

A Day in the Life

Take over our social media accounts for  a day or two.  The goal is to give our members a sense of what your day is like. We will give you access to our Hootsuite account which will allow you to post directly to all of our social media outlets:  GAINS Network, Facebook, twitter and instagram at the same time.   We ask that you post 4 -5 times a day - each post will take just a few minutes.

Mentor Highlight

You will be featured in a video that highlights your work and career path. The video will be posted in the network and highlighted for one week.  During that time we ask that you log in once a day to respond to student  questions or comments on the video feature.   The video recording should take no longer than an hour.  The timing of the video launch is really up to you so you can determine what works for your schedule.  Logging into the network once a day to respond - 10 minutes a day for a week.
